Out And About Near Hungerford

The Hungerford area also has a large amount of fun outdoor things to do, that could be ideal for the weekend.

One place that is worth checking out is Wallbury Hill. The hill is at 297 meters above sea level, which makes it the highest hill in Berkshire and the highest natural point in the South East England.  Wallbury Hill is the starting point for both the Testway and Wayfarers walk footpaths if your plan is to go further afield. It is in the southwest corner of the country, on a ridge extending into Hampshire and Wiltshire, around 4 miles south of Hungerford.

On the Hill summit is the iron Age Hill fort of Wallbury Camp. Combe Gibbet stands on the top of the adjoining Gallows Down. All affording spectacular views over the surrounding countryside.

Wallbury Hill is one of the three nationally important chalk wild grass lands in the North Wessex Downs, the others being Rushmore and Conholt Downs.

In fact if you’re a fan of walking or taking your dogs for a walk, with Hungerford surrounded by the North Wessex Downs AONB you’re in the ideal place for a hike. The AONB is located across the counties of Berkshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire and covers the following areas: Berkshire Downs, the North Hampshire Downs, the White Horse Hills, the Lambourn Downs, the Marlborough Downs, the Vale of Pewsey and Savernake Forest.

Another place worth checking out near Hungerford in Littlecote Roman Villa. It is a Roman winged corridor villa and associated religious complex at Littlecote Park. It has been archaeologically excavated under the direction of Bryan Walters, and is on display to the public.

Horse racing forms a major industry in the area, largely because of the good quality turf that comes with the chalk underlay and much of upland area is made over to gallops and other training areas. Several of the upland villages, especially Lambourn are home to major racing stables. Other villages such as Beckhampton and Kingsclere also have strong horse racing connections…. A great opportunity to combine a walk and see some of these thoroughbreds in action.
