Have you set yourself the New Years resolution of living a tidier, more organised life? Well, we’re here to help. The start of a new year is the perfect time to make some changes in your life and set yourself on the right track- and that all starts with a New Years declutter!
One of the biggest questions asked is “what should I declutter?”. It’s completely up to you. A successful declutter is one that makes you feel good about your living space as you take on the year ahead. Some good ideas for getting started are your bathroom cupboard, your wardrobe, your kitchen cabinets, and your shed or storage closet, if you have one.
Here’s some top decluttering tips to help you on your way.
- Donate old clothes to charity
Perhaps you’re reading this and wondering “where should I start”. A great place to begin is in your wardrobe. It’s quick and an easy place to kick off with.
Go through your clothes and take out everything you know you haven’t worn in the last 3 months. Once you’ve dug everything out, it’s time to really consider holding on to them. If your clothes are still wearable, consider giving them a second life by donating them to a charity shop or shelter in your local area.
2. Chuck things that have lost an important part
We’ve all been there! If you’ve been waiting to find an important part of an item paring, like a lid to a travel mug, consider just letting it go. If you don’t find it during your big declutter, chances are you never will, so just get rid.
3. Get rid of old cleaning and bathroom supplies
Makeup, soaps, shampoo and other common bathroom supplies do expire. Make sure to check their expiry date and bin those that are no longer in date. The same goes for cleaning supplies like bleach. So make sure to go around your house and bin anything that is no longer in date.
4. Invest in some storage solutions
A proper New Years declutter should defend against clutter in the year ahead, and that means investing in appropriate storage solutions. If you find during your declutter that you have a lot of stuff that you want to keep, but not much space to put it all, it could be worth considering renting a self storage unit. This will help free up a load of space at home, while knowing your belongings are being kept safe and secure.
5. Tackle the tasks you’ve been putting off.
In addition to decluttering your home, it’s time to declutter your to-do list. The new year is often the best antidote for procrastination. So go ahead and fix that leaky tap, repair that damaged cupboard door, or whatever chore you may have.
6. Set your seasonal supplies aside
If there are things that you only use seasonally, deck chairs, picnic blankets, and sports equipment for summer. Winter coats, holiday decorations in the winter. These would be ideal items to place into self storage.
