What is Self Storage?
Self storage is an affordable storage option for temporary and long-term storage. To find self storage near you, search for local businesses known as storage facilities.
When you decide you are in need of extra storage, you can rent a storage unit. Most storage units are rented on a monthly basis. Some storage facilities, like RedSpot, allow you to easily book online. Sign your contact online and gain access to a storage unit without needing to see or meet anyone, it’s that simple.
The following steps will explain how self storage actually works, so you’ll know what to expect during the rental process.
- Choose a storage facility
Most storage units work the same way. You sign a contract and then rent a storage space for the amount of time that you need. However, each storage facility will be slightly different. For instance, some companies might have more security measures in place, opening times might vary, and different types of unit access.
You should check out the various measures that are in place for your nearby storage facilities.
- Select the unit size that best fits your needs
The biggest mistake customers make is choosing the wrong size storage unit. Trying to fit too much into a unit that’s not big enough can be a nightmare. Our space calculator can help you get a good idea of how much space you’ll actually need.
When you come to move in and realise that you have the wrong unit size, we will do our best to find you the right storage unit size.
- Book your unit when ready
When you think you’re ready for storage, book your unit, either book online or over the phone. We can hold your unit for up to 8 weeks, giving you plenty of time to get ready.
Things to know before you book
- Your storage unit will be ready and waiting for you, you won’t pay until the day you move in.
- You will also need a padlock for your storage unit, if you have your own, remember to bring that, if not,we have padlocks available for purchase.
- Stay for as long as you want, you just have to give 2 weeks notice.
If you want to view a unit before confirming your booking, give us a call and we can arrange it.
- Complete your rental agreement
One of the most important parts of how self storage works is your rental agreement. Your agreement will have all the terms and conditions of renting a storage unit, and will set the tone of what’s expected from you.
It may be boring but it is important!
What’s in a rental agreement
- Description of unit
- Tenant responsibilities
- Cancellation / move out terms
- Non- payment terms
You will also need insurance while your items are in storage.
Most storage facilities will also require some form of insurance for the items that are placed in storage. This requirement is in place to protect both the client and the storage company.
At RedSpot, we offer our own insurance policy, however some household insurance policies will extend to cover items placed in self storage. So it might be worth checking.
- Pay an initial deposit
Your first payment will also include a deposit, which is fully refundable after you have vacated your unit.
You can either set up a direct debit, or bank transfer every 4 weeks.
Make sure you are on time with payments each month to prevent late fees building up.
- Move in when ready
Gaining access to your unit will depend on whether you’ve signed all the important paperwork.
You will have been given your unit number and all the other important info prior to moving in.
- You will be provided with a personalised key code to gain access to the storage facilities.
- We;ll send you details to help you find your storage unit once you are on site.
- If you’ve bought a padlock, it will be placed inside your storage unit before you move in.
