Do shipping containers leak?
You asked, so we revealed the facts
Despite common misconceptions, shipping container storage do not make for damp or leaky storage. In fact, they’re just the opposite, and just what you would want in a storage solution – they’re robust, secure, and totally weatherproof!
Most of the goods we use day-to-day arrive from overseas by shipping container. The fact is they are trusted enough by some of the worlds best known producers to keep every kind of product dry. The only reason they’d suffer from dampness or condensation is if they were wet and soggy before they were used for storage.
So here’s our favourite myth-busting facts about shipping container storage.
8 MORE REASONS…
Our favourite reasons why shipping containers are so good for storage:
1. THE WORLD’S FAVOURITE CHOICE
In at number 1 is the very reason we’ve already mentioned. If they’re good enough for the world’s shipping companies, they’re good enough for self storage.
Some 17 million shipping containers make 200 million trips a year, transporting goods across the high seas. So, when people are thinking about whether a shipping container is a safe and secure enough storage solution for their belongings, just remember… that iPad, laptop or smartphone that you’re reading this on was probably transported here in a shipping container.
And the shippers don’t want the weather or high seas getting in do they?
2. BEEN AROUND FOR OVER 60 YEARS
Shipping containers have been engineered specifically for transport and storage. They’re designed with the specific purpose of keeping their contents safe, clean and dry. There’s a reason they’ve been used for storage since the 50s!
Like we say to all of our customers – You won’t have a problem with shipping container storage – unless you store damp items.
3. SHIPPING CONTAINER ARE BUILT TO LAST
Shipping containers are made of tough stuff. Approximately 2 tonnes of rust-resistant steel to be precise. This is what gives them a 20-year lifespan – and just part of the reason they make such great (not to mention weather-resistant, dry and resilient) storage units!
At RedSpot Self Storage, we will only use “one trip” shipping containers for storage. This means they are brand new when they arrive at our storage facility, apart from the single trip they’ve taken to get there.
They are spanking new and in tip top condition when they arrive, and we can make sure they stay that way.
4. YOU CAN WORK OUT OF THEM
Many people actually use our shipping containers to help them run their business. Why? Because they’re ideal for storing stock, business equipment or archive documents. Just another example of how people are happy to trust a shipping container to house their work or business goods.
5. ROOM TO MOVE
Our storage containers are all eight feet high. So (unless you just so happen to be over 8ft tall), there’s no slouching or scrabbling around to sort your storage. You can walk right in (and drive straight up).
6. ACCESS ALL HOURS
Accidentally locked away your child’s favourite teddy or toy in your storage unit? All is not lost! You can access your RedSpot shipping container seven days a week – 24 hours a day. This means freedom to access your belongings whenever you need them, even in an emergency when teddy’s gone missing. You can also drive right up to your storage container, enabling you to come straight to the rescue of poor Mr Ted and save the day. Hurrah!
7. NOT JUST FOR SHOES
There’s not much that can’t be safely stored in a shipping container. Shoes your thing? You can store up to 6,000 pairs in just one of our storage units. Or even something fragile, like champagne glasses (you could fit 12,000 of those in!).
We see 100’s of customers happily storing soft furnishings and fabrics in our storage containers without the risk of damp or mold. But if you want to make double sure you steer clear of damp, we’d suggest avoiding wrapping everything in plastic – and bin liners are a ‘no’ too.
8. BIG ENOUGH FOR THE CONTENTS OF A 4-BED HOUSE
Need storage for a 3-bed house? Then a single shipping container is all the storage you’ll need. That’s right, our ‘LARGE’ units measure 160SqFt (14m2).
